Unique Midcentury Bespoke 1970s Danish Teak Cabinet

The story goes that this handsome, bespoke Danish cabinet was part of an extensive modular system of wall units, commissioned by a wealthy Brit to have installed in their British home some 50 odd years ago. The cabinets, units, shelves and fittings were made by the same manufacturer who crafted furniture for renowned Danish brand, Drylund, no less. This tells us a great deal about the high quality of this piece in terms of design, teak and construction. A great deal of thought, time and money was invested in it. Our supplier was tasked with dismantling the system in recent years but hadn’t got round to marketing it so we were delighted to take it off his hands! The design means that the cabinet can sit directly on the floor for use as a sideboard or media stand (it’s a good height for a TV on top). The look is about as minimalist as you can get… uninterrupted expanses of warm, richly grained teak. Just marvel at the patina on the door fronts. Inside are adjustable shelves and both cupboards can accommodate vinyl. As you browse through our photos, you’ll see the fittings at the back should you wish to use it as intended, mounted on the wall. We’re told it simply slotted onto securely moored screws. A one-of-a-kind piece, truly unique and a midcentury original with a great narrative and pedigree.

We have another of these units available that’s slightly shallower in depth. It’s listed separately but if you were interested in both, do get in touch for a combined price.

Description

This original, vintage piece is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. We have checked and cleaned the piece inside, and it has been wax polished to restore its glow but otherwise the finish is original. There is a large double door cupboard and a smaller one on the right. The three doors open and close with ease with all hinges and closures in good, working order. There are no handles but there are working locks and a key, although it should be noted the doors remain pushed shut when unlocked. Both cupboards have an adjustable shelf inside and the interiors are clean and tidy with just light signs of use. There are minor knocks and blemishes here and there on the exterior wood in line with its age, including a historical damp tide mark on the back – please see our photo. Obviously as it’s on the back it doesn’t show and it’s just localised to the plywood backing. Overall it’s very well constructed, solid and stable. As this was a bespoke piece, there is no maker’s mark but we don’t doubt its history and provenance. The original metal fixings are on the back should you wish to wall mount it. Do browse through our photos for an accurate account of its super order. We aim to be as transparent and open as we can in our descriptions and images. If you have any queries or would like to view, please get in touch.
