Set of Vintage 1970s Danish Two Seat Sofa & Lounge Chair by Georg Thams for Grant Møbelfabrik

Here’s a classic, midcentury Danish lounge set comprised of a matching two seater sofa and armchair, both unfussy, super stylish and looking great from all angles. Attributed to Georg Thams, he designed this range in collaboration with Grant Møbelfabrik in the first half of the seventies. They are in their original mid-brown leather, the upholstery is lightly lived in, rugged and hard-wearing, getting more characterful and better with age and use. We love the gentle contours of the sides and arms which soften what might otherwise be a boxy, austere silhouettes. They sit on rosewood bases which complements the leather tones perfectly. Comfort is a tricky thing to describe as its so subjective but we would say the sofa and chair as ‘medium firm’.

The sofa and chair are available for purchase separately – see their individual listings.

Description

This original, vintage lounge set is ‘sold as seen’. Both the sofa and chair are in good, used condition. The lower wooden rosewood frames has been cleaned and a natural beeswax polish applied to revive shine but otherwise the finish is original. Likewise, the brown leather upholstery is original too. Nine of the cushions (there are four on the chair, six on the sofa) have working zips, plump inner cushions and backing cloth in good – very good order. The seat cushion of the chair has a broken zip and the seam has been sewn shut as we’ve shown in our photos. Obviously as it’s on the underside it doesn’t show and there is the option to replace the missing zip with a professional upholsterer. The cushion leather is wrinkled and lightly scrunched with use, as we’ve shown, but very much as we would expect with vintage sofa of this age. The fixed leather upholstery on the frames is in good order. Again, there are wrinkles, sunlight faded patches and scuffs here and there across the fixed leather which can be seen in our various photos. This is primarily on the pieces’ corners / edges / tops and there is a blemish on one end of the sofa which we’ve flagged in our photos.  Overall marks, scuffs and wrinkles are very much part of its vintage, lived-in appeal in our view but do browse our photos. The finishing fabric underneath the cushions is in good condition too with some light tide marks underneath the end cushions as shown. The lower wooden frames carry some very light knocks and surface scuffs. They were imported directly from Denmark and it dates from the early 1970s. Although there is no maker’s label, they are a well-documented design. Do browse our numerous photos for an accurate sense of colour and order.
