Pair of Vintage 1960s Glazed Bookcases Display Cabinets by Morris of Glasgow

A pair of handsome, slim-line, glazed bookcases / display cabinets in teak by distinguished furniture maker, Morris of Glasgow. One large and double-width, the other small.  They date from the 1960s and their design perhaps nods more to traditional sensibilities than midcentury but they are practical, neutral pieces with a shallow footprint (just 28cm) that will slot discreetly against a wall without demanding too much attention or space. The unfussy design will mix with furniture, homeware and styles from different periods. Although at a glance simple pieces of furniture, the construction is superior with dovetail joints at the base, adjustable shelves and a beautiful, warm grain across their surfaces. The adjustable shelves inside give you lots of flexibility. They can house much more than books.

Description

This original, vintage pair of bookcases is ‘sold as seen’. Overall they are both in good – very good, used condition. The pieces have been checked, cleaned and wax polished on their external surfaces but otherwise the finish is original. The larger bookcase is divided into two sections. There are two height adjustable shelves on the left side and one in the other. There are four sliding glass doors, all in great order with no chips or issues to report. They slide freely in the runners. The interiors and shelves are clean and tidy. Overall, the piece carries some light scuffs, knocks and superficial marks here and there on its exterior, as you might expect with a vintage piece of this age, but overall this is minor – do browse our photos for an accurate sense of its condition. It is solid and sturdy with no wobbles or signs of repair. The small bookcase has two height adjustable shelves and the two glass doors slide with ease in their runners. The interior is clean and tidy and the doors are chip-free. Again, the piece carries some light scuffs, knocks and superficial marks here and there on its exterior, but overall this is minor. The Morris of Glasgow maker’s mark isn’t in place on either piece but we attribute with confidence as they have many signature details such as the style of the shelf pegs and the construction.
