Set of Four Vintage Ercol Model 608 Kitchen Dining Chairs

Ercol’s model 608 kitchen chairs are the big brother of the smaller, more compact 391 dining chairs. A variant of this more commonly seen design, you can see the similarities but the 608 chairs feature a much taller, elegant back and four spindles that reach down below the seat line, joining the back stretcher. Their seats are wider too so if you’re looking for comfortable dining chairs for long, lazy socialising, these are a better option than the 391s in our view. This particular set is in great shape, protected by well-applied varnish at some point years back (truly – we’ve seen some terribly applied varnish in our time!).

Description

This original, vintage set of four chairs is ‘sold as seen’. All the chairs are in overall good – very good, used condition. The chair seats have been cleaned and natural beeswax polish applied to revive their shine. The chairs have been varnished at some point in time, we suspect decades ago, hence their slightly orange tinge. We deliberated on whether to strip them but actually the varnish has been applied very well and is in good order across all chairs. You could opt to restore them yourself – the varnish would have provided a protective barrier to the solid wood underneath. There are no wobbles or joint concerns, and no repairs visible, but there are some minor surface scuffs, knocks and marks as you would expect with used, vintage chairs of their significant age. Although there are no original blue Ercol labels in place anymore, each chair is stamped underneath and cushion poppers are also in place. Do browse our photos for a good sense of their order.
