Rare Model Vintage G Plan Rectangular Extending Teak Dining Table

We see vintage G Plan dining tables regularly, such was their mass appeal and they are just so well made, standing the test of time. This particular model though is a rare find. Smaller than G Plan’s more commonly seen rectangular table but larger than their Fresco round table, its shape is somewhere between the two – a curved, chunky rectangle, if you will. In fact at a glance in its standard mode, it looks like a very rounded square. It’s in great condition having undergone a partial restoration – a refinished table top – and will comfortable seat four, possibly even six with smaller dining chairs, unextended. Pull the two sides apart to reveal the extension hidden underneath. This cleverly folds out taking it to just over 180cm in length so room for six – eight diners. As you would expect from G Plan, it’s really well-constructed in teak and for all that its design is rather robust and utilitarian, there are some thoughtful details like the squared legs which subtly morph into rounds, and the thick, rounded off table edges.

Description

This is an original, vintage table that is ‘sold as seen’. It’s in very good, used condition. We have thoroughly cleaned this piece and the main table top has been  restored, a process which involved careful sanding, layers of oil and a final polish to give a hard-wearing, durable finish. The extending section is hidden underneath the centre of the table. The two table halves are pulled apart to reveal it and the patented, folding mechanism rotates with the extension flattening out. The two sides are then pushed back together to give a seamless finish. All mechanisms are in excellent working order, moving freely and with ease. There is a small repair at the seam to one of the extension leaves. We’ve shown this close up in our photo roll but you will also see that overall it’s barely noticeable. As is often the way with extending tables, the extension is slightly darker than the main table top. This is quite simply because it’s been less exposed to sunlight and used less. There are minor scuffs and knocks here and there to the legs and edges but nothing to call out. Overall, this very fine vintage table is in super order with the G Plan label is in place, adding to its provenance.
