Rare Vintage 1960s Teak Sideboard by Harris Lebus

Something special from the British MCM era, this exceptionally handsome, 1960s sideboard by Lebus was clearly influenced by the Scandinavian design of the day, especially the curved handles on the drawers, so reminiscent of both Arne Vodder and Sven Anderson’s designs. Made in teak, the overall look is pared back and minimal, accented with refined details like those drawer fronts and the slender, tapering legs which create space under and around this piece (plus you can hoover easily!). And we like the size of this particular piece. It’s not an absolute beast as so many midcentury sideboards are. With a width of just over 1.6 metres and a shallow depth of 39cm, it’s not too wall or space hungry but the storage capacity isn’t compromised. There’s plenty of room for stowing stuff away. Checked and serviced to last another 60+ years, it comes in superb condition.

Description

This original, vintage piece is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. We have checked and cleaned the piece inside and out, applying a natural beeswax polish to nourish the wood and restore shine. The sideboard top surface has been restored, a process that involved chemically stripping away the original finish (gentler than sanding ensuring the vintage character of the piece isn’t removed entirely), followed by layers of oil and then wax polish for a durable, consistent finish. The two cupboard doors open and close with ease with all hinges and closures in good, working order. Inside the cupboard has a fixed shelf and the interior has light signs of use – a few rings and minor scuffs as shown, but it’s clean and tidy. The three drawers are beautifully made with curved, full width integrated handles. Again, their interiors just have light wear and tear. The drawers slide well and the top drawer is lined and sectioned, intended originally for cutlery. The divider can be removed. There are minor, superficial marks and blemishes here and there on the exterior wood surfaces and legs in line with its age, including a knock on the front edge that we filled and repaired as part of the restoration. This is shown in our photos. Overall it’s very well constructed, solid and stable. Sadly there is no maker’s mark but this is a well documented model by Harris Lebus so we attribute with confidence.
