Rare Midcentury 1960s Tall Teak Sideboard by Austinsuite

A rare and special find, you’d be forgiven for thinking this tall teak sideboard is Scandinavian in origin (it’s similar to an Omann Jun one of the same period), such is its classically MCM look. It’s actually a British-made piece by Austinsuite and of an exceptional quality, both in terms of design and construction. Our hunch is that this was designed by Clive Latimer and it dates from the early 1960s. You can see the Danish design influence a mile off – crisp lines, thoughtful functionality and beautiful expanses of premium quality wood. Behind the triptych of sliding doors are maple-lined cupboards with shelves, and below are two drawers, one sectioned and intended for cutlery. Tall but shorter in width than a traditional midcentury sideboard, this would suit a room where wall space is limited. An exceptional MCM piece in outstanding original condition, following a careful and considered workshop refresh.

Description

This is an original piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in overall good – very good, used condition. We have checked and thoroughly cleaned the piece inside and out and applied a wax polish to the exterior surfaces to rejuvenate its finish but otherwise it’s all original. The three upper sliding doors are in very good working order, sliding easily in their runners and with original handles securely attached and in very good order. All three upper cupboards are maple-lined. The two outside cupboards feature two fixed shelves in each side; the central cupboard features an extending fixed shelf, intended for mixing drinks. There are some light marks and minimal signs of use on the cupboard interiors – please refer to our photos. The lower two drawers have clean, tidy interiors and the smaller right drawer is sectioned, originally intended for cutlery. There are some odd superficial marks, nips and knocks here and there to the exterior wood surfaces. These are very minor though and not particularly noticeable as you will determine from browsing our photos. They are what we would expect to see on a piece of this age. There are no visible repairs to this cabinet. It’s very well-made, solid and sturdy. The Austinsuite maker’s stamp can be found in the bottom of the drawer.  Do browse our photos for an accurate sense of this piece but if you’ve any queries or if you’d like to view then do get in touch.
