Original 1970’s Westnofa Black Leather ‘Siesta’ Bentwood Chair by Ingmar Relling
Ingmar Relling’s 1965 ‘Siesta’ chair is a design classic, a midcentury icon. It earned him recognition with the Industry Council for Furniture and Furnishing Industry, winning first prize that year and cementing his reputation as a leading MCM designer, putting the Siesta chair on the world stage. Even the White House, back in the day, was furnished with Ingmar Relling’s Siestas! Designed for Norwegian maker, Westnofa, its floating, curvaceous form combines striking good looks with super comfort, its tilt and suspension providing great support. These chairs offer an excellent alternative to bulkier, more traditional lounge chairs as the proportions are compact and slim without compromising on comfort.
These is an original, vintage chair that are ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. The sectioned leather seat cushion has been cleaned and a natural, nourishing leather balm applied. The cushion is in very good order with plump inners, secure buttons and working zips. There are some wrinkles and creases as you would expect with vintage leather – these are very much part of its character and appeal. There is a small surface blemish on the seat section, shown in a photo. It’s barely noticeable. The cushion is moored into position with a cord tie at the top back, also in good order. See our photos of the back of the chair for reference. The canvas underneath the cushion is in very good order, although it is age and sunlight faded. This secures to the bentwood frame with cord, again in very good-excellent order with no areas of concern, repair or signs of fraying. The blackened bentwood frame is structurally sound and sturdy. There are some scuffs and knocks, particularly on the exposed frame ends but again this is in line with the chair’s considerable age. Do browse our photos to get a very good sense of the wear and tear which would categorise as minimal and commensurate. Sadly the original Westnofa sticker is no longer affixed to the underside of the chair but this is an iconic design and a well-documented piece so we state with confidence it’s a Westnofa ‘Siesta’ chair by Ingmar Relling and most likely dates from the late 1960s / early 1970s.
