Original 1960s Midcentury G Plan Fresco Teak Sideboard by VB Wilkins

Designed by Victor Wilkins as part of his Fresco range for G Plan, this is the much sought after, more compact sideboard at just over 1.5m in width, perfect for rooms that can’t take its more common, big brother version. It’s constructed in a mix of teak, teak veneer and darker afromosia creating the subtle distinction across its different surfaces and signature handles. The teak grain is striped in honey-toned bands, a beautiful characteristic of aged wood. It packs in a great deal of storage with two small side cabinets, a large, double door central cupboard and three drawers at the top. It’s ideal for the dining room, lounge or family space where things need to be stowed regularly. The shapely legs and curved base bar of this sideboard give it a grace and elegance that the later plinth-based G Plan sideboard lack – they are much ‘heavier’ in looks. The condition of this piece is extraordinary considering its age with just the lightest signs of wear and tear.

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. We have thoroughly cleaned the sideboard inside and out, and applied a natural beeswax polish to the external surfaces but otherwise left the original finish alone as it’s in such fantastic order. The exterior of this piece is in extraordinarily good condition with very few signs of wear and tear. The four doors swing with ease and have closures in good order. The three upper drawers are well-made and slide with ease and they have clean, tidy interiors. There is a very faint darker patch on the top surface where something has rested and the exposed wood around it has lightened a little in the sunlight but it should be noted this is barely noticeable. The middle drawer is felt-lined, intended for cutlery. Originally there were four removable dividers on one side of which two remain. The missing two have been repurposed at some point as shelf supports in the large cupboard below! We can’t decide if this is clever repurposing (they work very well in this role) or infuriating. Probably both! The two smaller side cupboards feature height-adjustable shelves but have the original shelf pegs in place.  This is a very well-made piece in teak, teak veneer and afromosia. The G Plan label is in the top drawer. Please browse our photos for a good sense of its super condition and gorgeous grain.
