Midcentury 1970s Light Oak Chair by Dick Russell for Gordon Russell

Angular, blocky and sharp-lined, this chair is a Brutalist-inspired, midcentury beauty. Designed by RD Russell, better known as Dick, for Gordon Russell, it dates from the late 1960s / early 1970s. It’s an evolution of his iconic Coventry cathedral chair from earlier in the decade, a chair design classic that’s now within the V&A’s furniture collection. Here he has updated his original design with an upholstered seat and angled back rest, and we’ve add fresh new upholstery in a flecked wool that’s somewhere between khaki green and dark mustard. The light solid oak frame and the fabric are a classy match. A statement, heritage chair with an excellent pedigree.

Description

This original, vintage chair is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. The solid, wooden oak frame has been checked, cleaned and a natural wax polish applied and buffed to revive its finish but otherwise its original. As such, the chair frame does carry very minor, superficial scuffs and marks here and there but nothing to call out. This wear and tear is light and in line with its age. Do browse our photos for an accurate sense of this. The back rest and seat pad have been fully reupholstered with new foam, materials and 100% wool upholstery fabric. The chair is solid and sturdy with no wobbles. Sadly the maker’s label is no longer in place but it’s a well-documented design so we attribute it with confidence to Gordon Russell.
