Midcentury 1960s Sideboard with Leather Handles by Gunther Hoffstead for Uniflex

What a privilege to be the brief custodians of this very fine sideboard. It dates from the 1960s and was made by British maker, Uniflex, designed by Gunther Hoffstead. Hoffstead joined Uniflex in the early 1960s, bringing with him from Germany, a modernist, minimalist design eye. Compared to the likes of G Plan, Ercol and McKintosh, Uniflex’s output was small volume and less mainstream, staying true to creating stylish domestic pieces that were simple, clean and ultra pared-back. Considered pretty cutting edge at the time, Uniflex pieces just don’t come around often nowadays. The construction and wood quality is a joy and one particular feature we love is that the backs of Uniflex pieces are always beautifully finished, meaning that don’t have to be pushed against a wall. Look at the border detail on the back of this sideboard. Across this substantial piece you have a large double-door cupboard, a melamine-backed, drinks cabinet and a bank of drawers, including one that’s lined and sectioned for cutlery. There are some signature features here, ahead of their time… the on-show metal hinges at one end and the long, slim leather pull handles. The wood grain is exceptional across the front and we love too the considered placement of dark and blonder tones. A special midcentury piece that deserves a special home where it will continued to be loved and taken care of.

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. We have checked and thoroughly cleaned the piece inside and out, and we have revived the external surfaces with a natural beeswax polish but otherwise the finish is all original. It’s in amazing condition, given its age. It features a double door cabinet with a fixed cutaway shelf inside. All hinges and closures are in good working order and the interior is clean and tidy. The same goes for the fall-door drinks cabinet with all mechanisms in very good order and a clean inside with another fixed, contoured shelf. On the right hand side is a bank of three graduated drawers. The top drawer is lined and sectioned for cutlery. All the drawers are clean inside and slide well. The six original handles are made of leather and there is a little wear to these as can be seen across our photos. This is minor and superficial – they are securely attached and in good order overall. The exterior surfaces and legs / base are in good order as well with only minor wear and tear – light scuffs and blemishes here and there. The sideboard top is lightly sun-light faded at one end in particular (clearly the side by the window!) but in the overall context if the piece it’s not hugely noticeable. Please refer to our photos. There are two small knocks on the far, back corners, both discreet. Again, we’ve shown this in our pictures. It is stable and solid, a very well-made piece with no areas of concern. The maker’s mark can be found on the back and inside the cupboard door. Please browse our photos for an accurate account of this sideboard. Any queries, do get in touch.
