Midcentury 1960s Model 15 Oval Extending Teak Dining Table by Niels Otto Møller for JL Møller

Elevate your dining room with this grand, extending table that has great provenance. Designed by Niels Otto Møller in the 1960s for JL Møller Møbelfabrik, this very fine, attributed piece arrived with us in rather sad condition. Although we knew it was something special, it was grubby and had a repair-gone-wrong on the table top. It went to off to our French polisher who wove his magic, finishing the table with high gloss lacquer and knocking back that poor damage to the veneer so that it’s now barely noticeable. It’s a stunning piece, showing that an every-day item of furniture like the humble dining table can be a thing of design beauty and history, as well as robust and functional. A perfect round in its regular mode, comfortably seating four. Pull the two sides apart to find the hidden folded extension in the the middle. This fans out and the side close for a seamless table top that can seat six – eight guests. The glossy table top finish makes the teak wood grain sing and we love the simplicity of the long, tapered solid teak legs.

Description

This original, vintage table is ‘sold as seen’. It is in very good, used condition. The table top has been professionally restored with a high gloss lacquered finish. It’s now in exception condition and the wood grain is beautiful. There is a small patch on the top surface where at some point the table owners have attempted to sand out a mark or scratch, resulting in them going through the veneer, a common DIY issue that we see regularly on vintage pieces. This has been brilliantly disguised by our restoration process and in the overall context of the table top, it’s barely noticeable (do browse our photos) but we wanted to flag this minor flaw and it’s reflected in our price. There are some very minor scuffs and marks to the trim and the legs, but overall this is light and superficial, in line with the table’s age and function. The two sides pull apart to reveal the extension integrated inside. With a simple rotation, this folds out and flattens. The two halves are then pushed back for a seamless table top. The mechanism and runners are all in very good working order. The extension is a touch darker than the two table halves, a common occurrence with vintage tables, quite simply it’s less used and has had less sunlight exposure. It’s a very well constructed table, solid and stable. The JL Møller Møbelfabrik stamp and the Made in Denmark Quality stamp can be seen in place underneath the table. Please do browse our pictures for an accurate sense of its great order – note the line / darker area you see in the photos of the table top is just a reflection of our studio ceiling!
