Antique Early 20th Century Three Tier Stacking Barrister’s Bookcase by Lebus

These rather grand, traditional sectional bookcases are increasingly sought-after, coveted by bibliophiles or those with treasures to display safely behind glass doors. Originally made for barristers, legal institutions and private libraries, they are cleverly crafted to be freestanding with shelves that simply stack on top of each other. No tools or fixings required. Each section comes with a lift-up glazed door that slides back on itself, resting above so you can access the books below. This three tier bookcase was made by fine British maker, Lebus, who started manufacturing such pieces in the late 19th / early 20th century so it comes with considerable age and character. It comes a little bruised and knocked here and there but nothing that compromises its appeal. It’s all part of its vintage charm. We love the additional open display shelf on top.

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good, used condition. It has been checked and cleaned inside and out, and we have applied a natural beeswax polish to revive the wood on the exterior surfaces but otherwise the finish is all original. There are five stacking sections in total – the top section with an additional open shelf, three graduated glazed bookcases and the base section. They simply slot on top of one another with no tools required. It is a freestanding piece. The glass doors of the three bookcases lift up and slide back and there are no cracked panels. They lift and move with ease although we would advise this is done with a gentle touch. The brass buttons handles are original and securely attached, and the Lebus name is seen on the brass lock escutcheons. Sadly we do not have the keys. The bookcase interiors are clean and tidy with some light superficial marks and scuffs from use as shown in our photos. As you would expect with an antique item such as this, there are signs of wear and tear here and there on the exterior surfaces, primarily concentrated on the back. There is some missing plywood on one section, a small hole in another, along with various other knocks and bruises as we’ve shown. We spotted a handful of historical woodworm holes in the base section but there is nothing active and likely hasn’t been for decades. When stacked the bookcase is solid and stable, slotting into place easily. We believe it is mahogany. Do browse through our photos for a good sense of its condition. If you would like us to share a video of the piece with you via WhatsApp drop us a line – we’d be very happy to oblige. Likewise, if you’ve any queries, just get in touch.
