Elliotts of Newbury (often abbreviated to EON) was a British furniture manufacturer founded in 1870 in Newbury. Originally a joinery and building firm, it expanded into furniture production in the early 20th century, gaining a reputation for high-quality craftsmanship. During the Second World War, the company contributed to the war effort by manufacturing aircraft components, most notably parts for the Airspeed Horsa glider.
After the war, Elliotts of Newbury transitioned into modern furniture production, becoming a key figure in Britain’s mid-century design movement. In the 1950s and 1960s, the company embraced contemporary styles, producing elegant, minimalist pieces in teak and other fine woods. Their furniture was known for clean lines, subtle detailing, and high build quality, helping bring modern design into British homes.
A major contributor to this success was designer Guy Rogers, who worked closely with EON and helped shape its post-war aesthetic. His designs reflected Scandinavian influences, combining functionality with understated style. Although EON was not as widely recognised as some larger manufacturers, it developed a strong reputation for design integrity and craftsmanship. Today, Elliotts of Newbury pieces are valued as classic examples of British mid-century modern furniture.
