Vintage Restored Ercol ‘Grandfather’ Rocking Chair in Beech & Elm

The ultimate, indulgent rocking chair, Ercol’s ‘Grandfather’ rocker is a design classic, dating from the 1960s. With a large back, low seat and wide arms, you won’t move for hours once you’ve settled in. It has generous, over-sized proportions for gentle, enveloping relaxation. As you would expect from Ercol, it’s an expertly constructed piece with many of their signature features from the exaggerated beech bentwood back, to the striking spindles to the gently curved arms to the comfort and functionality. A must for every Ercol fanatic wanting to expand their collection but as is the way with timeless design, it would look at home in a mixed-style interior too, from midcentury influenced to traditional country cottage.

Description

This is an original, vintage rocking chair that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in excellent, used condition and has been fully restored by Karl. The chair has had the original finish gently sanded back and then oil layers have been built up, followed by wax and a polish to give a durable, smooth finish, very similar to the original and without compromising the integrity of the piece with anything too invasive. The chair has the original poppers in place at the back and under the seat, should you choose to add Ercol cushions at some point. f you plan to not have cushions or fixed cushion pads, the poppers can be easily unscrewed. There are minor marks to the wood which, in line with not wanting our restoration to be heavy handed, are to be expected with a vintage, used piece, but as you can appreciate from our photos, they are very minimal. As you would expect from Ercol, it’s superbly constructed in solid elm and beech. Sadly the blue Ercol sticker is no longer affixed but this is unmistakeably Ercol and a very well-documented piece.
