Vintage Midcentury Norwegian Rykken Brown Leather Armchair
An original, vintage, Norwegian armchair in deep brown leather, most likely designed by Elsa and Nordahl Solheim. Dating from the 1970’s, this unusual design playfully balances curves to create a flowing, organic form. Its beautiful, dark bentwood frame of stained beech is superbly comfortable. This chair works as a standalone, statement piece, or as an additional seat to accompany other lounge furniture. Its compact proportions and the space created by the bentwood design, mean it’s not a seat that requires a lot of room, in the same way a more conventional armchair might. It’s a neat piece but offers all the comfort of a larger lounge chair.

This is an original, used piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in excellent, vintage condition. We have lightly cleaned and polished the wood with a natural beeswax polish. Likewise, the joined cushions have been cleaned and nourished with leather balm. The original brown leather upholstery is in very good order with plump inner foams, working zips and no specific marks to flag. Vintage leather does wrinkle and show areas of wear, particularly at rub points, such as the seat seams, but this is very much the nature of the material and as we would expect. The finishing leather and strapping underneath the main cushions are also in excellent order. The dark bentwood frame shows minor signs of use with some small scuffs here and there. There is a little wear to the finish on the arm ends which can be seen in our photos. It’s solid constructed and sturdy with no signs of repair. Sadly there is no longer a maker’s label attached but this design is well documented (indeed, we’ve sold many over the years) and we believe it to have been designed by Elsa and Nordahl Solheim for Rykken, Norway. Please refer to our photos for an accurate sense of its excellent condition. We do have a matching chair currently available.
