Vintage Midcentury 1970’s Greaves & Thomas Tall Sideboard

Greaves & Thomas made some classic midcentury furniture from sofas to dining sets to large, wooden pieces like this. Much like Ercol, they had a reputation for producing affordable, good quality furniture that was both lovely to look at and practical.  Their furniture doesn’t come around often, most likely because it’s kept and used for many years, but when it does, it is usually in excellent condition, like this 1970’s piece. This tall sideboard / highboard in a rosewood effect veneer  provides much useful storage behind cupboards and drawers, along with areas for displaying books and treasures.  Although unmistakably from another era, it wouldn’t be out of place set in amongst modern mixes of furniture.

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in excellent condition. We have cleaned and polished it. There are some minor marks and scuffs but this is in line with its age. The three drawers feature inset circular handles, they slide with ease and are clean inside. The top drawer features cutlery dividers and is velvet-lined. The drinks cabinet with a drop door was originally fitted with a plastic flexi-hinge which, as is common with this type of hinge, has given way, so a pair of small chrome hinges have been added. Likewise, the original tapered legs have been reinforced with two additional solid oak joints, replacing the less sturdy plywood fittings, but this isn’t noticeable in any way as it’s underneath and doesn’t affect the piece other than to add to support. The glass-fronted display section features a single glass shelf inside. The sliding door cupboard below also features a adjustable shelf. The maker’s label can be found inside the bottom drawer.
