Vintage Ercol Windsor Two Seater Sofa
These stylish, blond wood sofas from Ercol have enduring appeal. With striking spindles at the back and the upward swoop of the arms in profile, it looks great from all sides so would work well in a space where it won’t be set against a wall. And sitting on Ercol’s signature tapered legs, it has a lightness to it so appears much less bulky than a modern sofa. It’s also about as comfortable as it gets! The tilt and the shaped back cushions, giving lumbar support, making it a sofa you won’t want to leave. You can create a more contemporary look by removing the arm pads (we’ve shown this in our photos). These are kept in place with poppers which can be unscrewed. The original fabric might not suit but the cushions are in such excellent order, they could be easily and cost-effectively recovered by an upholsterer. Likewise, you might opt to remove the back cushions entirely and instead pile up loose cushions, a common update to this modern classic model.
This is an original, vintage sofa that are ‘sold as seen’. It is in overall very good-excellent, used condition. The frame itself is in excellent order. We’ve lightly cleaned the wood with a natural beeswax polish but have otherwise left the original finish well alone. The original webbing underneath the seat cushions is enclosed in finishing fabric but it feels in very good order with no sagging. Usually this is the first thing to give on these Ercol pieces (although it should be noted it can be easily replaced with modern webbing by an upholsterer) but here it wouldn’t need replacing for many years to come. The shaped cushions are in very good order too, as are the poppers that more the arm cushions in place. There are some light marks and signs of use on the fabric (see our photos) but it’s clean, there are no stains and there is no odour. The key thing to note with these shaped ‘official Ercol’ cushions is that they are in excellent condition for recovering. Ercol cushions made from new can be expensive but these can be reused and simply recovered if this particular fabric doesn’t suit. The wooden chair frame is superbly crafted in solid and there are no wobbles, joint concerns or signs of repair. There are a few very minor scuffs and marks to the finish. The original Ercol sticker is no longer affixed but this is a well-documented, well-known Ercol Windsor piece.
