Set of Four Original Mixed Vintage Ercol Dining Chairs

Charting the evolution of their classic, hoop-back, spindle dining chair is this mixed set of four original, vintage Ercols. Starting with the earliest CC41, commodity stamped model, dating its production to between 1941-1951, this chair had to comply with war-time austerity production regs. It was constructed with an English elm seat and beech back, spindles and legs but the design was basic, heavy-set and rather utilitarian. Note the straight sides of the seat. Later came the more refined seat shape, rounded and with a slightly bevelled edge. Overall, the chair proportions became a little more compact too but still six spindles remained at the back. Next came the Windsor version we see the most. The seat shape has been further reworked into Ercol’s signature ‘oyster’ shape with much more bevelled sides. And the final chair in this quartet takes the classic Windsor shape and elongates its back into the Quaker chair. ‘Mix and match’ Ercol chairs really do look the part in a country / vintage-inspired kitchen around the family dining table.

Description

This mixed model set of four original, vintage chairs is ‘sold as seen’. They are in good, used condition. The two later chairs – the 370 Windsor and the Quaker – have been checked, thoroughly cleaned and a natural beeswax polish applied and buffed but otherwise, we have left the original finish alone. The two earlier chairs – CC41 and the 1960s Model 370 – have been restored with the original finish stripped off, followed by oil, wax and a final polish. As you can see from our many photos, the chairs do carry light, superficial knocks, scuffs and scratches but overall we would categorise this as minor and what you would expect with preloved pieces of this age and purpose. They are superbly crafted, stable and sturdy with no repairs. Remnants of the blue Ercol labels can be seen on the back of three chairs. Do browse our photos for a good sense of their condition.
