Restored Original Ercol Model 492 Drop Leaf ‘Square’ Table

An iconic piece of British mid-century design from Lucian Ercolani in flawless, fully restored condition. Made for a short time between 1964-1970, this is a rarer Ercol model that looks like a square when extended but it’s actually not quite. It’s made in Ercol’s characteristic beautiful blonde wood with an elm top and beech splayed legs. These Ercol tables are characterised by their softly tapered, elm wood table top that gently slopes off. There is no hard edge or angle at the sides. Against the sharply angled beech legs, it’s a thoughtful piece of design that works beautifully. And of course the patina of the elm is simply warm and honeyed. A timeless design that never goes out of fashion, an Ercol piece of furniture is for life and this particular, almost square when extended, table design is one of our favourites.

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in very good, used condition.  The table top and legs have been gently sanded, oiled and finished with a protective wax polish to give a durable finish that shows off the beautiful elm patina. There is a chip to the table top’s edge which we’ve shown in our photos. It’s barely noticeable but we wanted to call this out and it’s reflected in the price. The drop leaves are extended with Ercol’s signature, simple pull mechanism on the underside and these arms moves with ease and are in good working order. There are no repairs, the table is superbly constructed and in sound, sturdy order. The original Ercol sticker can be seen on the underside. With the leaves down, it’s a compact piece that will tuck neatly away. When required it extends to a generous 125cm is length so can comfortably accommodate six diners.
