Original Vintage 1930’s/1940’s Swivel Desk Chair

An early midcentury, large desk chair that dates from the late 1930’s / 1940’s and comes with bags of slightly eccentric, very British charm. With stately proportions, it has rugged, old fashioned good looks from its angular oak arms and base to its deep brown Rexine upholstery. Rexine was an early faux leather and here it’s shaped to the curves of the frame with studs. There may be visible knocks but they feel entirely in keeping with a ‘working’ piece that’s been much used and loved. Possibly made by Hillcrest but we cannot find a documented identical piece.

Description

This well used, vintage chair is ‘sold as seen’. It is in fair-to-good vintage condition. The original upholstery has been gently cleaned. The oak wood arms and legs have been thoroughly cleaned and waxed. The varnish finish on the arms and legs is worn and marked in places but we have left well alone as we like very much the worn patina of this vintage piece. The swivel mechanism works with ease. The legs and wooden frame is structurally sound and swell-made. The original castors move with ease and are in place. We can see no visible repairs to the frame or upholstery. As shown clearly in the photos, the Rexine fabric upholstery is frayed and worn in places, particularly so on one side. All the upholstery studs are in place as is the hessian finishing cloth underneath the seat although it has come away from the frame a little on one side (this doesn’t show). Sadly there is no maker’s mark but it’s a truly original, antique British piece. You could extend its life by having the chair reupholstered with new leather or fabric but we absolutely love its lived in charm as is. Please refer to our various photos for an accurate sense of the condition of this item.
