Original Midcentury Ladderax Three Bay Modular Shelf System in White
Truly versatile pieces of furniture, British maker, Staples, made modular Ladderax storage systems, incorporating shelves, desks, bookcases, corner units, drawers and more. These different elements can be configured in whatever way suits. This is an especially handsome, large, three-bay shelving system in very good order indeed and also features the more desirable but less common white metal ladder uprights. It incorporates five cabinets (three with glass, sliding doors, one open and one with a wooden sliding door), a pull-down writing desk with pigeon-hole storage and two book shelves. Move the shelves and cabinets around to suit your requirements and use this for books, plants and storage, showing off your favourite homewares and more. This piece of classic, vintage midcentury furniture would work in any room in the modern home from lounge to bedroom to kitchen, creating a high-impact, statement feature. More often than not, the component parts of original Ladderax systems are bashed and scratched with use but this particular set is in excellent vintage order.
Description
This is an original, vintage modular piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in very good – excellent, used condition. It has been thoroughly cleaned and the teak shelves and cabinets polished with natural beeswax polish. The full inventory for this modular shelving system is:

In our experience Ladderax systems are often quite heavily worn and marked, because of the nature this multi-purpose, high-use piece of furniture – this set however is in fantastic condition. There are some light surface marks and scuffs here and there but these are minor and in line with its age and function. All glass doors and internal shelves are in excellent order and slide with ease in their runners. The same goes for the other sliding cupboard. All interior wood is clean and tidy. The shelves are in good order too and the drop-down writing desk cabinet is clean and tidy, inside and out as well. This cabinet comes with a working lock and key, and the drop-down hinges move with ease. There are some minor scratches around the handle and lock shown in our photos and we’ve also shown a small area of wear at the back corner of the open front cabinet. Depending on where this is placed (in our pictured configuration its up high) in the system, this wouldn’t necessarily show. The white enamelled, metal ladder uprights have some small paint chips here and there. You could opt to disguise these with a dot of paint but we’ve left them alone as we feel they’re not noticeable. All four glass / open cabinets have the original Ladderax Staples maker’s mark inside. Please do browse all our photos for an accurate sense of condition.
The nature of this modular system means it can be configured in all manner of ways – we would recommend that there are two people on hand during assembly. The uprights are designed to lean against the wall (it’s not freestanding) but you don’t need to secure it to the wall.
