Original 1970s G Plan Brasilia Compact Teak Highboard

A rather rare and particularly handsome, 1970s G Plan teak and afromosia highboard that ticks all the practical boxes, offering lots of useful storage for the dining / living area of the modern home. Highboards are tall, grand sideboards and were big in the seventies – every home had one! But they’re often large, looming pieces, rather ungainly in size, very heavy and a dominating presence in a space. Not so with this thoughtful design. For a start it’s shorter and more compact than a traditional highboard. Behind drawers and doors, you’ll find a drinks cabinet, a ‘hidden’ sectioned cutlery drawer and height adjustable shelves. Its sits on long tapered legs linked by G Plan’s signature curved bar (an E Gomme design feature carried over from the 1960s). This space underneath gives the piece lightness. There are more curves on the handles and the side profile. Again, these thoughtful design details soften and balance this large piece of furniture. The wood is in fantastic order inside and out. It’s been loved and looked after by its previous owners. The subtle shade and grain difference between the teak and afromosia is used very effectively in the overall design. And of course there’s a huge amount of storage and display space. This fine piece is a catch.

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in excellent, used condition. We have thoroughly cleaned the item, inside and out, applying a natural beeswax polish to the exterior wood. The three drawers are beautifully made with dovetail joints and they slide with ease. They are clean and tidy inside. The drop-down drinks cabinet pulls down smoothly with the runner hinges in great order. It’s also clean and tidy inside, and features an adjustable shelf. There’s a further height adjustable shelf in the open central section and this shelf features a beautiful tapered front edge. There’s a discreet, wide drawer at the top of the unit with a lined cutlery section that has removeable dividers on one side and an open section on the left. Again, the wear here is very light and it’s clean and tidy inside. The lower double door cupboard is very spacious, has an adjustable shelf and is in great order including the door closures. It’s a wonderfully crafted piece that’s been expertly constructed and thoughtfully designed to be both handsome and practical. The red G Plan sticker is affixed to the inside cupboard door. It’s solid and stable with no signs of repair. There are only light superficial signs of wear and tear with very light scratches and marks.
