Original 1950’s Vintage Ercol ‘Cowhorn’ Model 338 Fireside Chair

Immediately recognisable as Ercol, this rare, vintage fireside chair dates specifically from the late 1950’s. You can see why these became known as Ercol’s cowhorn chairs with their curvaceous, statement backs but the model 338 isn’t to be confused with their dining chair ranges. This is a deliberately low chair, designed for being set close to the fire. This design with seven spindles tells us this is an early version of the model (it first featured in Ercol’s 1959 catalogue) and it has a wide, oyster-shaped seat. Originally a cushion pad would’ve been in place to raise the seat height a little and add comfort. These can be easily sourced ready-made or made to order if you so wish. These chairs rarely become available such is their enduring appeal. They look beautiful in boudoirs or bathrooms as occasional seats or stands, adding a touch of elegance. And they also looks perfectly at home next to the wood burner, Aga or open fire.
