Midcentury 1960s Stag Cantata Teak Dressing Table with Stool by Ron Carter

It’s not often we source dressing tables as complete sets with their matching stool so we were delighted to come across this pair, especially in such outstanding condition. With Ron Carter following on from John and Sylvia Reid at the design helm of British manufacturer, Stag, he continued their legacy, creating ranges of affordable but stylish furniture from 1965 onwards.  These ranges were good quality, well-made and for the modern home. With six drawers and his signature, contoured round handles, this grand dressing table was part of the Cantata range of teak furniture. With a minimalist design, it comes with lots of storage space and expansive three-part mirrors to get your hair and makeup just so. The original footstool, upholstered in a white vinyl and in very good order too, tucks snugly away when you’re done. It’s very well made and substantial. Although unmistakably vintage / midcentury, its design stands the test of time as does its superior construction. A very fine British midcentury piece.

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in overall very good – excellent, used condition. We have thoroughly cleaned the dressing table and applied a natural beeswax polish to the exterior wood surfaces. All six drawers slide with ease, feature dovetail joints and are in good, clean order throughout. There are some very minor superficial marks to the external wood surfaces, along with some small chips to the veneer at the bottom of the leg stands and a small dent at the back right edge where it sits against a wall. These are not noticeable and are in line with what we would expect on a piece’s age and function. These don’t detract from its considerable appeal. There are many photos which show the super condition of the wood throughout. There are three separate mirrors, each set in a wooden frame. The main central mirror can be tilted at the bottom to create an angle. This is done via a hinge at the back which is in good working order. The two side mirrors can be removed (they slot onto discreet brackets on the mirror’s frame) and they can be angled too. The whole mirror section can be removed by unscrewing the two brackets at the back. The large accompanying footstool has the original white vinyl upholstery on it and this is in very good order. There are some minor pin prick marks on the top (too small for our camera to pick out) and a small scuff on the lower seat edge but otherwise the vinyl is in great order. There are some minor scuffs and dents to the wooden sides but again these don’t detract from its looks or purpose. This is a really well made, solidly constructed piece with no signs of repair. The Stag maker’s stamp can be seen inside the lower left drawer and it dates from the 1960s. Please browse our photos for an accurate sense of the overall superb condition.
