Midcentury 1960s Solid Teak ‘Volnay’ Sideboard by John Herbert for A Younger

A very fine, British mid-century sideboard designed by John Herbert as part of his Volnay range for A Younger in the 1960s. Made in solid teak and afromosia to give a subtle two-tone effect, this is a heavy (literally!), substantial piece providing you with a great deal of practical storage. And yet, despite this, it has retained an elegance and femininity with curves at the front edge and the ends. We particularly love the rather over-sized round handles. Although midcentury, its design feels more traditional so it would be at home alongside pieces from different eras, in different styles. A super piece of attributed British midcentury design.

Description

This original, vintage piece is ‘sold as seen’. It is in very good – excellent, used condition. It has been thoroughly cleaned inside and out, and the top surface has been stripped, oiled and polished to give a durable but authentic finish. The drawer fronts and other exterior wood has had a natural beeswax polish applied but otherwise the original finish has been left alone as it’s in such good order. All four drawers slide with ease, feature dovetail joints and have clean, tidy interiors with only light signs of wear. The top cutlery drawer is green felt lined and has removeable dividers. The two cupboards are clean and tidy inside with minor marks. They each have a fixed shelf. Overall it’s very well constructed, solid and stable. The maker’s name plate can be seen inside the right cupboard door.
