Large Antique Mahogany Globe Wernicke Five Section Glass Front Bookcase

A stunning example of a large, five section, authentic Globe Wernicke bookcase. Now a much sought-after, antique collectable, coveted by booklovers around the world, Globe Wernicke Company Ltd of London made beautiful, robust stacking bookcases, designed for libraries and prestigious offices. It’s a name synonymous with fine quality and superb craftmanship. This modular bookcase is in excellent, vintage order and is comprised of seven component pieces – the top, two smaller bookcases, three larger bookcases including a slightly deeper one at the bottom, and the base drawer. Globe Wernickes’ are characterised by their lifting glass doors which with a patented mechanism slot into position above the books. Each book shelf section is metal banded for added strength and stability. A very handsome, stately item of furniture that would be as useful in today’s homes as it was, perhaps in barristers’ offices or a university library, back in the day.

Description

This is an original, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in very good, used condition. We have given the piece a careful clean and polish. There are seven component parts in total – top, five bookcases and the base drawer unit. The glass doors lift up and slide back with ease as they should (although we would advise this is done with care and a gentle touch).  The lower drawer slides with each. The internal woodwork is clean and in good order with a few marks from use here and there. The exterior wood is also in clean, good order. As you would expect with an antique item such as this, there are signs of wear and some scratches and knocks. These are minimal though and do not affect the appeal of the piece in any way – in fact they rather add to it in our view! When stacked the bookcase is solid and stable, slotting into place easily. There are no repairs that we can see. Please refer to our photos for an accurate sense of super antique condition. The original maker’s plate can be found at the back of three of the bookcase sections.
