Rare Ercol Swan Back ‘Grandfather’ Rocking Chair with Cushions
Ercol’s large, ‘Grandfather’ rocking chair is a design classic, dating from the 1960s. Characterised by its large, fanned back, low seat and wide arms, it’s generous, over-sized proportions will provide gentle rocking relaxation. This model features the decorative Swan Back design popularised in the 1960s. As you would expect, it’s superbly well-made, with traditional craftsmanship and with many of Ercol’s signature features from the exaggerated beech bentwood back, to the striking spindles to the upturned, curved arms to the comfort and functionality. Included are some wonderfully colourful, fitted cushions, featuring flora and fauna. A must for every Ercol fan wanting to expand their collection and as is the way with timeless design, it would look at home in a mixed-style interior, from midcentury influenced to traditional country cottage.
This is an original, vintage rocking chair that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in very good – excellent, used condition. The wooden chair frame has been cleaned and a natural beeswax polish applied. There are minor surface marks to the wood as you would expect with a vintage chair of this nature but these add to its rich patina and character in our view. It’s superbly constructed in solid elm and beech, with no signs of repairs or areas of concern. The blue Ercol sticker is still affixed to the back of the chair. It comes with two original Ercol cushions that are in excellent order, featuring a floral, peacock upholstery. There are no marks, faded patches or signs of wear to the fabric, and the cushion inners are plump and the zips in good, working order. The back cushion is secured in place with poppers and the seat cushion has fabric ties which moor to the spindles. New / replacement Ercol cushions alone are expensive so if the fabric doesn’t suit, these could be cost-effectively recovered. Please check our photos for an accurate description of the condition of the piece.
