Danish 1960s ‘Floating’ Modular CADO Shelf System Wall Unit by Poul Cadovius

This Danish, 1960s, Cado ‘Royal’ wall system is a true statement piece, created to make a bold visual impact and exemplifying the ‘form and function’ MCM aesthetic. Designed by Poul Cadovius and retailed through Heal’s, London, this system is a very clever piece of engineering with the different modular elements ‘floating’ on two tall teak uprights that are secured directly to the wall. Each piece hangs on pegs without the need for bolts or additional fittings. This particular single bay is perfect for the audiophile with storage for vinyl in the record cabinet and a large shelf for your turntable below. And because it’s entirely wall-mounted, not in contact with the floor, there won’t be vibrations or the risk of stylus jumps through the ground for the ultimate clean, undistorted sound.  A multi-faceted, multi-functional piece for display, play and storage that you can configure to suit.

Description

This is an original, vintage modular shelf system that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in good – very good, used condition. We have checked and thoroughly cleaned each of the individual modular elements, applying a natural beeswax polish but otherwise the finish is original throughout. The sliding doors of the record cabinet are in very good working order, moving with ease in their runners. There is a fixed vertical divider inside and the interior is clean and tidy. There are some light marks and scuffs on the exterior wood but nothing to flag or anything very noticeable. The three graduated drawers of the chest of drawers are very well-made with dovetail joints, clean interiors and they also slide easily. Again, there are minor marks, knocks and blemishes on the external surfaces, primarily on the top on this element – please refer to our photos. The two shelves are also in very good order. Their accompanying metal brackets are lightly tarnished as shown. The two uprights screw directly into the wall – we do not supply screws as this is dependent on the wall / surface you plan to screw the uprights into. The shelf brackets slot into holes on the uprights with additional small shelf pegs supporting at the bottom. The two cabinets – the record cabinet and chest of drawers – simply hang on larger metal rods, as we’ve shown. You can configure the different pieces how ever you wish. We have detailed the inventory and the dimensions of each component part above. Sadly there is no CADO label affixed to the back of the cabinets anymore, but it was acquired with a number of other CADO systems pieces so we attribute it with confidence.
