British Midcentury White & Newton Teak & Afromosia Sideboard

This is a grand, imposing sideboard, made in the 1960s by White & Newton of Portsmouth. They were renowned for using the very finest quality wood, and here are teak and afromosia, expertly crafted in perfect harmony to give a subtle, two-toned finish. This large piece provides ample storage with two cupboards, both featuring an integral shelf, and three generous central drawers, including one designed for cutlery. A rare and very handsome find that will look wonderful in the modern home.

Description

This is an authentic, vintage piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in very good, used condition. We have cleaned and polished the teak and afromosia with a natural beeswax.  The drawers are in excellent condition and move with ease. The internal wood is clean, tidy and in good order. The top drawer is sectioned for cutlery and have is felt-lined. The two cupboard door closures are in good, working order, and they both feature a fixed shelf. The right hand door has a repair, visible on the inside only (see our photo). This is as a consequence of a common issue with this type of pivoting, hidden door hinge. At some point the door has been pushed too far open and caused an internal split. The repair made though is very good. It’s strong and stable, unlikely to deteriorate or happen again. As you can see, the repair isn’t visible from the outside but in the interests of transparency we wanted to flag it. The external wood is also in very good condition on all sides. The top surface carries few minor scuffs and marks including a very faint cup ring, but this is in line with its age. Any marks are very small and certainly don’t detract from the piece.  It’s a very well constructed, solid piece. Sadly there is no maker’s mark but it’s a documented design, attributed to White & Newton of Portsmouth.
