Antique Victorian Folding Walnut & Cane Travel Steamer Chair

Originally designed for the wealthy voyaging Victorian, this folding travel chair would have accompanied them on their adventures, ready for deployment whenever a seat was needed, whether that be on the deck or in port. Made in solid walnut and with woven back and seat panels, it’s a elegant chair with long, contoured lines. It would be a handsome addition to a orangery or sun room and can be used in the garden as an occasional seat. An unusual, quirky historical item with a lovely narrative.

Description

This is an original, used piece that is ‘sold as seen’. It is in very good, vintage condition. We have lightly cleaned and polished the chair with beeswax but nothing too invasive to ensure the original finish and aging is preserved. The folding mechanism moves with ease. The woven cane panels on both the seat and back are in excellent order. There are some marks here and there on the wood as you can see in our photos. These are small water marks and some patches of fading. As it’s solid walnut, this could be refinished and most of these marks would go but we would recommend that a professional undertakes such a job to ensure no damage to the cane work.  The chair is both sturdy and solid, although it’s worth pointing out this is a more antique piece meant for occasional use so we wouldn’t recommend that it’s used as a lounge chair. It should be used with care. Sadly there is no maker’s mark but these pieces are well-documented. Please browse our photos for an accurate sense of the overall condition.
