Antique Early 19th Century Elm Dough Bin / Table

If you love unusual furniture with history and character then you will adore this fine, old thing. Dating from the late 1700s / early 1800s, this antique dough box would have been used for mixing and proofing bread dough. It comes with a lid on top to keep the proving bread inside undisturbed and fingers off. The top would then have been used as the table for shaping the loaves before they went into the oven. It’s wonderfully crafted in solid English elm with a primitive decorative trim along the front and it sits on tall legs. As you might expect it comes with bruises, knocks and scars but these only add to its authenticity and are very much part of its appeal. The bin itself in generous in width and depth, perfect for throwing things into. We can think of hundreds of ways this could be repurposed for storage in a home that loves eclectic finds. At just over 80cm in height it would be an excellent console; it could house blankets or towels; it could be used in the kitchen as a mini island or breakfast stop; toys and kids’ stuff could be stowed away; the possibilities are endless. A fine piece of old British furniture from another time.

Description

This original, antique piece is ‘sold as seen’. It’s in good, rustic condition. We have checked and cleaned it, applying a natural beeswax polish to the exterior wood surfaces but otherwise the finish is original. The single-piece lid lifts off entirely to reveal the ‘bin’. The interior is in good order with some knocks and marks from use as shown. The external surfaces of both the lid, base and legs are heavily bruised, scuffed and scarred from use and age. This can be seen across all our images including a notch out of the decorative trim on the front of the piece. This wear and tear is superficial though, the piece is well made in solid British elm, very sturdy and with no joint concerns. There is no maker’s mark but the style, construction, finish and wood date this to the late 18th / early 19th century so it comes with a great deal of history.
